Goodbye but not gone — make your own V2 vegan party pies.
V2's ready-made party pies have been discontinued. But the spirit lives on: you can make plant-based party pies at home using V2 mince — the same meaty, crispy filling V2 used, in a format that lets you control the pastry, the portions, and the party. Here's how to fill, bake, and serve them.
The basics
Why DIY party pies with V2 mince?
V2 Foods discontinued their ready-made party pies — but that doesn't mean party pies are gone. Instead, it's an opportunity to make them exactly how you want them: with better pastry, different fillings, or the perfect size for your gathering.
V2 mince is the hero here. It's the same plant-based filling V2 used in their pies — made from soy protein, canola oil, coconut oil, tomato paste, seasonings, and yeast extract. It cooks like ground meat: browns quickly, crisps at the edges, soaks up gravy, and behaves identically to beef mince in a hot pan. One 800g pack of V2 mince yields 30–40 homemade party pies, depending on how generous you are with the filling.
You handle the pastry: make it from scratch, buy sheets from the supermarket, use pre-rolled filo, or even puff pastry if you want a lighter bite. The mince does the heavy lifting — all the savoury depth, all the meaty texture. You just need to wrap it, seal it, and bake.
Why V2 mince works
The plant-based case for DIY party pies.
Your pastry, your rulesMake them with homemade hot-water pastry, shop-bought sheets, filo, or puff pastry — whatever fits your skill level and taste.
Better than the originalControl the filling-to-pastry ratio, add extra spices, use a richer gravy, or keep it simple. The mince stays meaty and crisp.

The recipe
How to make your own V2 party pies.
A simple, forgiving method — use shop-bought pastry sheets to keep it quick, or make your own hot-water pastry for the authentic pie feel.
Cook the fill
Heat V2 mince in a pan with diced onion, garlic, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and broth. Simmer 8–10 mins until thick. Cool before filling.
Prep pastry
Use shop-bought shortcrust sheets (easiest), or make hot-water pastry from scratch. Cut circles (7–8cm) or use a cutter — one pack makes 30–40 pies.
Fill & seal
Place a spoonful of cooled V2 fill on each pastry circle. Top with a lid, press edges to seal. Use egg wash or plant milk to brush the top golden.
Bake & serve
Bake at 200°C for 15–18 minutes until golden and crispy. Serve hot with tomato sauce, chilli, or curry mayo. Freeze unbaked pies for later.
Pro tips: Make a double batch and freeze on a tray, then bag them — ready to bake anytime. Upgrade the fill with chilli, mustard, or fresh herbs. Use plant-based sour cream or mayo as a dip. Serve on a board with three different sauces for impact.

Australian-made plant protein, backed by CSIRO.
V2 Foods launched in 2019 as a collaboration between fast-food mogul Jack Cowin (Competitive Foods Australia, Hungry Jack's), Australia's national science agency CSIRO, and venture firm Main Sequence Ventures. The mission was simple: make plant-based meat that tastes and cooks like meat — with zero compromise on flavour.
Co-founder and CEO Nick Hazell — formerly of MasterFoods and PepsiCo — led the development. By June 2019, the team had 57 prototypes under their belt. They launched the Rebel Whopper for Hungry Jack's in October 2019, then expanded into mince, sausages, chicken, and now party pies. The range uses plant protein from legumes to create a product that crisps, browns, and cooks like meat.
Today, V2 is stocked across major Australian retailers (Woolworths, Drakes, independent butchers, food service) and is expanding into Asia and Europe. The pies were showcased at Fine Food Australia 2024 with overwhelmingly positive feedback from a sample of 3,000 attendees.
The Plant Pantry supplies V2 Foods across Australia — wholesale for food service, bulk packs for retailers, and retail-sized products for home cooks.
